Sleep is particularly important for your brain. During the day, your brain is constantly producing waste while it operates, and one of the few ways for you to actually get rid of that waste is by sleeping.

Don’t skip out on a healthy and consistent sleep routine. 7 to 8 hours per night is a good amount of sleep for most people, so make sure you’re getting at least that much regularly.

Bad Habit #1: Smoking

There are many bad habits that can cause harm to the body and mind, but smoking is a contender for one of the worst. It’s well-known that smoking increases the risk of developing diseases like oral and lung cancers, but its effects aren’t just limited to the body.

The cerebral cortex natural thins as you age, but smoking speeds this process up, raising the risk for conditions like dementia.

While quelling your smoking habit won’t completely reverse the damage to your brain, it does help prevent further damage and allows your brain to start the healing process. So it’s never too late to curb the habit.

Healthy Habit #2: Eating Healthy

Diet plays a crucial role in the everyday functions of your body. Food is the fuel source for your body and mind, and a poor-quality fuel source means that your performance will suffer.

Implementing things like Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients can play a huge factor in keeping your brain and body in tip-top shape for years to come.

Bad Habit #2: Alcohol Abuse

The ill effects of alcohol on your mind are no secret. When you drink alcohol, your cognitive abilities will suffer in the short-term at the very least. But for those who abuse/overuse alcohol the damage can become long-term. Alcohol abuse can lead to both organ damage, particularly to the liver, as well as long-term damage to your brain.

Occasional indulgence in alcohol probably won’t cause too much harm, but if you are going to drink it’s important to keep it in moderation.
